We could never dream what began as a request from a customer to modify one of our then good selling bags would be our best seller after 26 years. It started as a 9″ x !0″ bag with a two inch gusset. It had one large inside pocket. Front flap with a magnetic snap closure. The flap had sculpted Leather “waves” and two types of beaded fringe. It featured a functional medicine bag, and beads of natural stones from around the world. It had a fringed four braid strap preset to a specific length.

Although the bag basically looks the same, my how it has changed.  The leather: It is either USA domestic number 1 grade deerskin tanned and dyed to our specific requirements. Or, when it is available, we buy New Zealand Number 1 grade leather. It’s the best of the best. New Zealand deerskin is farm raised and almost flawless. We can only get it to our specific requirements occasionally. When it is gone, it’s gone!

The front of the bag basically looks the same and no intention to change it. Incidentally, there is no extra charge for selecting one or more of our options. You get to totally customize your bag.

Next on the list is that we no longer machine sew any of the bags. It is 100% hand stitched with deerskin lace. This actually makes the bag more durable and have a larger inside space. for looks and light load a 2″ gusset has been the standard for years.

Let’s talk about pockets. At first there was just a single large inside pocket.

 Now you have the  multi-pocket inner liner. The liner is made of rugged pig skin. We want it to last as long as the purse does. It comes with a zippered pocket on one side and two open pockets on the other side.

Finally the strap. We had many requests for a flat strap. Especially from those who carried a big load. We decided not only to accommodate that request but to fix  a long term situation with the four braid round strap. Now both flat and round straps are attached to the center of the gusset. For many years we saw ladies tying knots in the strap to make it fit the way they wanted it. Made a really big clumsy knot. Now the four braid strap comes in two sides. You still have a knot but a much smaller square knot looks much better.  In addition to that you can pick your length from cross body to tucked under your shoulder. The flat strap is the second choice. It is made with a double layer of deerskin with a modified whip stitch. We wanted it to be adjustable and  at first we made them with a metal buckle to make them easy to adjust. But Yikes! In came the comments about the metal buckles just don’t look good on such a gorgeous bag. So we developed a way to adjust the length with lace. And yes, this takes a little effort.  However, we do have an option to have the strap set to a specific length.  Of course there are the usual options as well.
